Somalia

'The Land of Punt' was a trading partner of Ancient Egypt with the earliest recorded expedition recorded in the 25th century BCE. Some theories link the people of Punt to the Pygmies of Central Africa and the Khoisan of Southern Africa. Several different Empires dominated trade in the area during the Middle Ages with trade links as far as East Asia. In the 19th century, the Italians and British gained coastal control through trade treaties. The inland remained under control of the Dervish State which was only defeated with air power in 1920. An ally of the Ottoman and German Empires, it remained the only 'Scramble for Africa' resistant, independent Muslim state through World War I, also fighting off the Ethiopian Empire. Independence returned in 1960. A Federal Government of Somalia was established in 2012 following the extended and ongoing Somali Civil War with various armed groups competing for power.
