Goya's Ghosts

Goya's Ghosts (Javier Bardem, Natalie Portman,Stellan Skarsgard)

Saturn devouring his children (Francisco De Goya 1824)

I really enjoyed the movie, combining wanting to get to know more about great artists of the past and set against a historical background. I am sure it is not a `true story' and many liberties have been taken, but for me the story is more important than what really happened if it can lead to interesting discussion that improves us.

There were many things that the movie made me think about.

1) We all have dark histories.

It gives another glimpse at the embarrassing history of the church. The `fervent beliefs' held by `good men' that lead to the most abysmal atrocities in the name of a `good' god.

2) We should be careful of strong beliefs that happen to support our status.

3) Beware the liberator

Napoleon's armies came in the name of `liberty, equality, and fraternity' to replace monarchy and give people the rights of man. It replaced it by sacrificing those rights and creating an empire. Was Napoleon's rule worse than what the church and monarchy before it? Did England really liberate the people by beating Napoleon at Waterloo? I don't know enough about the history to have an opinion, but this movie did position the feeling that the `right side' is often not so clear. Robert Mugabe was once a revered `saviour of the people'.

4) Natalie Portman is a phenomenal actress.

I have always been a fan and this is another tick in her box. Brilliant work to add to The Other Boleyn Girl, Closer, Garden State, Beautiful Girls and others.
